History of Skiing

During the second half of the 19th century skies were started to use in sporting activities. In 1866, the first skiing contest organized in Christina. In 1880’s Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen passed across Greenland by skies and published his famous book On skies across Greenland.

The significant development of skiing came in 1896 from Mathias Zdarsky who invented new techniques for alpine skiing.  One of his inventions was ‘stem’ technique also known as snowplow technique. This key development led to beginners to experience the slopes in a slow and controlled manner. With this, these new techniques spread and helped make skiing a popular activity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skiing
